Collaboration between WHO, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse and Autism Speaks

2014 Targeted

World Health Organization
Geneva, Switzerland

In May 2013 the Executive Board of the World Health Organization adopted a Resolution on “Comprehensive and Coordinated Efforts for the Management of Autism Spectrum Disorders” and is due to be discussed at the upcoming 67th session of the World Health Assembly. In September 2013 WHO hosted a consultation on the subject, with technical and financial support from Autism Speaks. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together experts and representatives from governments, UN agencies, and the civil society to identify research needs and current challenges in implementing comprehensive care programs at scale for persons with ASD and other developmental disorders, and establish a collaborative commitment to strengthening capacities in countries. Proposed collaboration with Autism Speaks for 2014 aims to implement ‘priority key action’ identified by the meeting in September 2013. The focus of proposed actions is in the area of advocacy, development of evidence-based and feasible interventions, capacity building of care providers and caregivers, improving early detection and assessment of ASDs and other developmental disorders, and organization of services (covering seven of the nine ‘priority actions’ for WHO and partners to support capacity building in countries).
